About

I am a self-taught artist based in the UK near Rye in East Sussex. I started painting in later life upon retirement, so have no art school or other formal training and therefore feel free to do whatever I want without anxiety or constraint.

I took up painting as the result of breaking my ribs (left side!) playing tennis, my other retirement passion. This left me in considerable pain, unable to move comfortably and with a lot of time on my hands. I found I could raise my right arm vertically (rather like The Karate Kid) so put this to good use standing in front of an easel at the local painting class.

After many years of all-night painting sessions (tennis all day) during which I officially became the world’s No 1 listener to Green Green Grass of Home on Spotify, I am pleased & honoured to be exhibiting at both the National Portrait Gallery in London and the Scottish National Portrait Gallery in Edinburgh this year.

I am particularly interested in quirky portraits that reveal something otherwise unseen in the sitter or the world around them and enjoy working at scale & pace on challenging fun projects. Humans & animals all welcome.

If this appeals to you please get in touch.

Niall :)
